Today is the day I have been waiting for. My time spent sleeping and mourning my broken heart in Portadown came to an end for a while; with a day spent in Belfast. After a talk about modern slavery, which really made me consider thinking seriously about Fair Trade, we headed to the bus station. Public transport in Northern Ireland leaves much to be desired from the point of view of someone who lived in London, but we made it to the city eventually.
I could have gone off to the museum, or the Titanic area, but I am glad I walked the walls instead. I feel I had more of an experience. The centre of Belfast feels like many other capital cities I have visited, but the atmosphere changes when you cross the gates and walk the peace lines. Defensive architecture in a city is intimidating.https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2015/sep/29/belfast-berlin-wall-moment-permanent-peace-walls
Back in Portadown, we walked for what feels like miles and miles along the canal. I have now achieved 9 miles on my fitness watch, making up for doing next to nothing for a few days. My phone died so I didn't get a chance to take all the pictures I had hoped.
The country side is different here, obviously, to the Sussex downs I am now more than used to, and much too in love with. Still, walking the canal back to the Quaker centre felt peaceful and calm. We crossed a few bridges, and was barked at by a farm dog.
Dinner is taking forever...;-( I will one day be fed to make up for all this walking....one day...
